Frequently Asked Questions

I hear the term "age-appropriate environment" a lot. What does that mean? In our Head Start program, it means an environment that is safe and secure where everyone is accepted and the curriculum approach respects the needs of the children.

I'm looking for a center where I can place my child. I'm working and get good monthly pay, but I have many bills. I heard that Head Start is FREE and I want to sign my child up for Head Start. What do I need to do? Head Start is a Federally Funded program and your information is correct - it is a FREE program to eligible children. At least 90% of Forsyth County's 499 Head Start slots must be filled with children from families that meet the annual Federal Poverty Guidelines. Please contact our office at (336) 727-0617, and we will help you determine your eligibility.

I was told that Head Start requires a child's physical and dental exam. What happens if I don't have them? Physical and dental exams are required. Assistance is given to parents in acquiring medical and dental screenings/exams for their children so Head Start applications can be completed.

My child will not eat too many different foods. I cook the things my child eats and nothing else. What will my child eat in Head Start? The children in the program will receive nutritious meals and snacks everyday. Some of the food will be new and your child will have opportunities to "try/taste" different foods along with his/her classmates. (Parents may also join their child for lunch when they volunteer.) On-going Nutrition information and recipes will also be available for families at each of the Head Start sites. Parents are encouraged to submit family favorite recipes to be considered for the Head Start menu.

Someone told me that you have a Mental Health consultant. What does a Mental Health consultant do in Head Start?
A Head Start Mental Health/Wellness consultant is a part of the Head Start family/staff. The Mental Wellness consultant helps staff and parents identify activities and environmental changes that may lessen the challenge they may be experiencing between a child and themselves--either in a classroom or within the home.

Can my whole family be involved in the Head Start program?Head Start believes in building strong FAMILIES. The Head Start classrooms are only open to children between the ages of 3 and 5. However, there are FAMILY EVENTS planned throughout the year that enable total families to enjoy activities at no cost. Parents are encouraged to spend as much time as they can to assist the program in all areas from the classroom to the computer lab. Workshops of all types occur throughout the year and parents are able to "pick and choose" those they wish to attend. Parents immediately become members of their Center Parent Committee Groups and are informed about the importance of parents on the Policy Council of Head Start. Parents are asked to contribute suggestions for classroom lessons plans, menu items, center/program events/activities, workshop presentations, etc. YES--Head Start is TOTAL Family Involvement.
