THE SECOND CENTURY CAMPAIGN FOR FAMILY SERVICES

Family Services will construct a new headquarters facility in order to better serve clients, optimize access and space for programs, and offer the larger community a model project for educating and demonstrating the merits of sustainable, environmentally
conscientious architecture.

The new 20,000 square foot Family Services Gateway Center will be built in the Southeast Gateway on a 4-acre site acquired by Family Services on South Broad Street. This vibrant, mixed use development consisting of condos, shops, the new YWCA and other businesses, is adjacent to downtown, yet is in close proximity to Old Salem & Salem College, the North Carolina School of the Arts and Winston-Salem State University. It will be a great location from which Family Services can launch its second century.

Raised to date:
2,700,000

A Natural Environment for Families
Family Services, rooted in a century of lasting legacy, wants to continue to impact the future by creating a design for tomorrow's families.

The Southeast Gateway Center will be the first building in Forsyth County to be certified "green" by the U.S. Green Building Council. While there are only 3,600 "green buildings" in the nation today, it is projected that by 2010, 10% of all new structures will be green.

All over the country, green design is being incorporated by major cities, corporations, universities and homes. For Winston-Salem, the future begins today... thanks to the vision of Family Services.

Building green will reduce future operational expense, thereby leaving more resources available for direct client care (green design offers typical operating savings of 8-10% annually).

In addition, consistent with the mission of Family Services, building a facility on an abandoned, post-industrial site, with an emphasis on conservation, reinforces the themes inherent to the agency's work with families:

Families can experience renewal even after experiencing disruption or neglect
Everything has intrinsic value which needs to be put to positive use
Everyone needs to be more attentive to how one's actions impact others - in the family, the neighborhood, the community and the environment

How You Can Help
Campaign pledges may be paid over a period of up to five years and donors will have opportunities for special recognition. Planned gifts that benefit Family Services and the donor are welcomed in support of the endowment fund. Please contact our Resource Development Department, (336) 722-8173, for more information.

Green - for a better tomorrow
A "green building" uses high performance and sustainable design features so that:

energy, water and materials are used efficiently during construction and use
health and productivity of occupants are supported
negative impact of the structure on the local and global environment is minimized
